National Missing Children's Day

Your Online Guide to Safety Resources, Prevention and Advice

We can't always be there to protect our children, but we can make sure we empower them with information to protect themselves at any age.

If you have any recommendations for the Parent Toolbox, please do not hesitate to
contact us.

The Parent Toolbox will be updated frequently.

The Polly Klaas® Foundation is a national nonprofit that helps find missing children, prevents children from going missing, and promotes laws like Amber Alert that help keep children safe.

-Free
Child Safety Kit

The kit shows you how to teach your children which strangers to ask for help, how to recognize dangerous situations, and how to respond. It also includes information on recording your child's fingerprints and storing your child's DNA.

-Free
Internet Safety Kit

The kit will show you how to keep children safer online and will help you open communications about the Internet with your children, as well as protect them from online predators.

Stop Bullying Now! is a great website not only for parents, but it's actually targeted to children.

The double version allows children to receive information, tips and advice in a way that they can understand. It also features a
Youth Expert Panel, made up of middle and high school students. It is recommended that you watch the free online webisode cartoons with your child, which can help open up the discussion to bullying.

The
parent's version is also full of free materials and resources for different types of bullying, including the newest type: cyberbullying. Cyberbullying is more dangerous than once thought, since it's something many children tend to keep private.  It can have disastrous consequences, including suicide.

MissingKids.com is the official website for the national center of missing and exploited children. This is not a website you would want to wait until your child is missing to check out.

On the contrary, many of the resources and information on kidnapping and danger prevention will help you keep your child safe.

Among the resources:
-A guide for parents and guardians on how to report a missing child, tips on international abductions, and much more.
-The
Amber Alert guide, success stories and resources.
-Newsletter sign up so you can receive child safety tips directly to your inbox.

May 25th is National Missing Children's Day. May 25th is the anniversary of the day in 1979 when 6-year-old Etan Patz disappeared from a New York street corner on his way to school and has been observed as National Missing Children’s Day since 1983 when it was first proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan.

LostNMissing, ran by a gal who makes banners for the Lost and Missing, has been entered into a contest on Twitter.

If she ends up in the final twenty, she will have a huge spotlight put on her work that highlights the Lost and Missing.

I run www.InformingChristians.com and was contacted by one of her people.

The Twitter page keeps giving people a hard time opening and a lot of people give up trying to vote. As a result, all the pretty girls that are in it just for fame are winning. Some already famous people are in the contest too, like Oprah.

People can vote twice an hour, and the contest ends, June 8, 2009.

Information can be found on a page of mine:

    Thanks for any help,

  3. Trevor Carpenter Said,

Another great tool for the American parent is to exercise your 2nd Amendment rights. Learn and teach your children about firearms. Go to Shooter's Paradise in Oxnard. http://www.shootersparadiseoxnard.com/

    They have classes!

  4. Ellen Rodriguez Said,

    @Trevor

We have actually contacted Shooter's Paradise in the past to request them to write about firearm safety and they declined anything to do with our blog.

I, cannot, in good faith, add them to the list of resources because of the owner's adamant response in not contacting him in the future.
