Incident: Homicide
Victim: Seth Scarminach, 16 years old

Location: 2400 Block of Maricopa Highway (Highway 33)

Suspects: Hispanic male(s), approximately 16-20 years old

Contact: VCS Major Crimes Bereau, (805) 477-7000

Details:

On 2/26/09 shortly before 2am, firefighters and paramedics responded to a stabbing in the unincorporated community of Meiners Oaks.

The victim was identified as 16 year old Seth Scarminach of Ojai. Scarminach was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy was conducted this afternoon, but the cause of death is being withheld until Monday. [Update: Teen died of multiple stab wounds. He died from stab wounds to the neck and chest.]

Sheriff's investigators say their preliminary indication is that he was stabbed during that altercation with another party goer.

Investigators describe the suspects as Hispanic male(s), approximately 16-20 years old.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Ventura County Sheriff's Major Crimes Bureau at (805) 477-7000.

UPDATE 1: A 14-year-old suspect was arrested at his Mira Monte home at 7:20 p.m. Sunday. Sgt. Joe Evans said the crime is being investigated as gang-related, and extra patrol has been assigned to cover the Ojai Valley tonight.

The suspect was arrested without incident and charged with murder. He was booked into the Juvenile Detention Center in Oxnard.

UPDATE 2: The Ventura County Star has confirmed the suspect as Alex Medina.

UPDATE 3: Alex Medina is scheduled to be in court Tuesday, April 28, 2009.

Alex was a real piece of work... He was in trouble all his life and had made threats against others. His mom tried to get him help and even sent him away for awhile. But ask yourself if Alex was your kid what could you have done? Okay now since he was not your kid what could you have done? I am sure a lot of you say "beat his a$$" or "get him help" okay beating his butt would not have helped getting him help maybe but where do we go to get the help for this type of problem? Schools? The school knew of his problems why didn't they help? Mom knwe of the probelms why couldn't she help? A lot of family and friend knew of his problems and knew this day was coming why didn't we do anything? What could we have done to prevent this? Yeah lets just blame the mom or someone else that is the easy thing to do... A lot of us saw this coming and I believe the one's that saw it coming are to blame too! Maybe I should have tried to spend some time with Alex to steer him away from this. Oh wait I was to busy with my life to care about him. Bottom line is YES he committed this crime and only deserves life in prison or death sad to say about a 14 year old but he got thru the school system cracks and mom's supervision on this one!

BTW ~ his dad has spent most of his life behind bars and maybe Alex was mad at the system for taking his Dad from him and did not understand why...

This is a terribly tragic. We've just lost one of youths. I pray for Seth and his family. One thing I can say is there are warning signs and people need to listen instead of enabling kids with problems. To make excuses for the problem kid and blame others fails everyone, including the kid with problems.

Someone mentioned a "Brandon" and that Alex Medina should get the same fate Brandon got. Does anyone know more information about who this Brandon is, what he did and what was his fate?

Google Brandon McInerney. He was a teen who killed his classmate in front of his classmates at EO Green. His name was Larry King, and he was a great person. He was shot in back of the head. He is being charged as an adult. People are comparing him to Brandon that he should also be charged as an adult.

It is truly a sad thing, Seth was a good kid, a friend of mine. He was just at an innocent party, a place that I went to often. It was completley unexpected and nobody ever would have thought something like that would happen, especially the place it occured. Everybody wore red to school today in honor of him and had a moment of silence.

I just saw him at prom the saturday before it happened. He was a handsom guy and loved by many.

Words can not describe how Im feeling, how we all are feeling.

Thanks for the information about Brandon. My children attended elementary school with Alex and I remember they always had stories about him and the strange things he did back then. The key as a parent is these kids must not be allowed to blame others for their actions or they can never overcome their problems. As a parent it is up to us to do what we can to help the child be accountable. I will say however that once the child is involved in a gang they are brainwashed daily and the parents have no control.

And by the way... Didn't we just have a nearly fatal stabbing this past New Year?

I hope that this young boy's life will stand for something. I hope perhaps people will wake up the the fact that there are problems with gangs and drugs and our kids are vulnerable--not just so called looser kids but everyone's kids. Maybe it's a sign of the times, I do not know.

Alex made the decision to do what he did and he went through with it, and im sure there is nothing my firends mother could have done. She was most likely at the upper house asleep. The kid who lives there is an amazing guy, funny, charming and his parties were always just about haviung fun and sharing the love. He had many before in which i attended and they always went great, his mom trusted him and his friends. It always takes just one person, one fucker to ruin it. So there was a little weed and some alcohol, that in no way has to do with what happened Sat night. Stop blaming others and finding reasons why it happened. It happened becasue a little kid was trying to be tough and be in OSL and didnt think about the consequences.

The mother just had trust in her kid, and some gang banger had to mess it up.

Strangely I knew nothing about this earlier in the day. I'm feeling a little sick so I put on a cozy sweatshirt that happens to be red. Then when I went to pick up my kids I heard about what happened and saw the many youths wearing red. This is so sad.

Alex Medina is not a killer because he happened to get "high" one day and decided to kill.

Alex Medina is a murderer who was on his way to killing, but no one took those signs of him being "at risk" seriously.

These comments are only offensive to you if you are Alex's friend, as everyone is entitled to their thoughts.

I dare you to find another source that lists details such as the reports here. You stated that this information is available other places, but it's not. The Star doesn't post complete information and this is the best place to find everything based on what really happened, not what some reporter wants it to be.

Yes there was a stabbing off of Waite street on New Year's Eve. The Man was stabbed 14 times and left in the gutter. Just this past week a drug needle was found in the street in that area too.

Seth so didn't need to be taken away. Alex was looking for a fight and he followed Seth and friends to the next place they all went too. My son is friends with many of the kids that were there that night. It's truly sad that such young lives are gone.

second, people who are bitching about kids being out at 2am...they are in highschool in a town of 8,202 people, OF COURSE THEY ARE GOING TO BE OUT PARTYING! i did it, you did it, some of you are still doing it, now come on..

third, i dont believe any of this has to do with parents, i know the parents of both of these kids, and they could not be better people (especially seth's parents!)

fourth, this should NOT be a race issue, this should be an issue of right and wrong. i honestly think people get so bored in ojai that they try to stir up these conflicts that are so trite, and ultimately get consumed by them.

finally, my heart goes out to ALL involved with this, it really is an awful thing to happen. Ojai is supposed to be a place that is about peace and love, and its up to all of you to preserve that. now shape up, stop bickering about whose fault this is, and show the world that Ojai really is a beautiful place to grow up.

I didn't know or want to know either of these boys or the families. One an OSL gang member in and out of jail, which as a matter of fact had just gotten out two days before commiting the crime. I know from experience what people say when they get into those situations, and most likely Alex would have said something along the " Fuck red Homie your a buster" or" You better take that off". If seth was a good kid who didnt have problems he would of not escalated the problem or tried to act tough and fight him. But Seth did, so neither side is innocent and neither side deserves blame it's the lifestyle these kids choose and thats how it ends.
