Vigilantes of the Month

Vigilantes of the Month:

Alert and suspicious City National Bank personnel prevented a lottery scam after becoming suspicious! They prevented a theft of $134,000!

An anonymous Port Hueneme resident called the Port Hueneme PD after hearing glass breaking outside his home.
Two Oxnard brothers were in county jail Wednesday after being arrested on suspicion of second-degree vehicle burglary in Port Hueneme. This Port Hueneme resident prevented the loss of items and the cost of replacements.

Thank you to the community who has contributed in the safety and prevention of crime in our cities. All it takes is one person to do what is right.....and it is not always going to be easy.

So, here at 805 Vigilantes, we thank and salute you!

Great job, Oxnard PD!

Reporter: Elidet Reyes 0 Responses
Being a police officer is a thankless job.

When a shooting happens, cops are sometimes the ones that take the blame for the actions of a few knuckle heads. Cops are somehow blamed for gang related activity and some people even accuse the police department of being corrupt. This is not so. No one ever notices all the good that does happen, so I wanted to take this Sunday to point out some obvious job well done stories.

Let's recap the wonderful job the Oxnard Police Department has done this month:

August 25th: Detectives from the Oxnard Police Department, working with the assistance of the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department and the United States Marshals Office, took murder suspect Jeffrey Aguilar into custody.

August 29th: Officers screened 1142 motorists who passed through sobriety checkpoints. There were four drivers arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. Four may not seem like a lot to you, but let's not forget that all it takes is one drunk driver to change the lives of many.

August 29th: Oxnard police officer Brian Bishop arrested a 16 year-old student in the lobby of Hueneme High School for possession of a loaded handgun. The student had a loaded .380 caliber semi-automatic handgun wrapped in a shirt.

Officer Bishop also wanted to question the same student for his involvement in a verbal altercation on campus Thursday.

Officer Bishop prevented a school shooting. This was probably one of the biggest tragedies prevented this month!

Thank you, Oxnard PD!

Lottery Scam Averted by Alert Bank Personnel

INCIDENT:

Lottery Scam Averted by Alert Bank Personnel
DATE/TIME:
Friday, 8/29/08 at 1412 hours
SUSPECT/S:
One Hispanic male in his early 20s and one Hispanic female
VICTIM/S:
Elderly husband and wife from Malibu
LOCATIONS:
Food4Less, 150 W. Esplanade Drive, Oxnard
City National Bank, 500 E. Esplanade Drive, Oxnard

DETAILS:

Oxnard police are investigating an attempted embezzlement of an elderly Malibu couple Friday afternoon in Oxnard. If it were not for alert and suspicious City National Bank personnel, the potential loss in this incident could have been over one hundred thousand dollars.

A Malibu couple in their 80s was approached by a male and female outside Food4Less. The suspects told the couple they had a winning lottery ticket worth over $500,000, but because they were from Ecuador and not U.S. citizens, could not cash the ticket legally. They asked the couple for collateral in the amount of $134,000 in order to cash the ticket with an “agency” in Los Angeles.

The couple went to one bank and obtained a cashier’s check in the requested amount. Because the first bank did not have sufficient cash, the couple went to City National Bank to cash the check. Bank personnel grew suspicious of the circumstances of this large withdrawal attempt and immediately contacted Oxnard police.

Officers arrived on scene within minutes and canvassed the area but could not locate the suspects. Quick thinking by City National Bank personnel resulted in no monetary loss to either victim.

Lottery scams and related embezzlement crimes are infrequent but regular occurrences in Ventura County and across the country. Persons who are approached by strangers asking for help in cashing checks, lottery tickets or other monetary items—but are required to give cash deposit first—must not give any cash or personal information to such persons and contact local law enforcement immediately.

An investigation is continuing.

Cheaper to Call a Cab than get a D.U.I.!

Reporter: Elidet Reyes 0 Responses
Call your D.A.D.-Designate A Driver!

Is it worth it?

If you can't afford a taxi cab for about $20-$40 in Ventura County, then you certainly can't afford a D.U.I.! Factor in your D.U.I. attorney fees, as well as a license suspension, can total into the thousands of dollars.

Those $40 for a taxi seems like a bargain right about now.

If this isn't enough to sway you, then how about the possibility of wrecking your car? How much will you spend in repairs?

Of course, money comes and money goes, but should you get in your car and choose to drive, there is nothing to replace the person you might kill for that decision.

On Tuesday, August 26, Thousand Oaks jogger Karey Marsh was killed when Nicholas Lagrotta struck her. He was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.

Don't let that be you!

Designate a driver. Call a cab. Make prior plans, because in the end, it is cheaper to call a cab than get a D.U.I. Pass it on.

Reporter: Ellen Rodriguez 0 Responses
DETAILS:

After a lengthy investigation, Oxnard police detectives arrested a suspect in the theft of 15 metal memorial plaques stolen from the Ed Hunt Rehab Point. Jeffery Phillip Thompson was arrested without incident at his home in Oxnard. During a search of the residence, a quantity of methamphetamine was found.

The arrest of Thompson culminated a two week-long investigation into the memorial plaques theft. The plaques were attached to benches at the state beach park and were valued collectively at about $3,000.

The case was cracked when employees from Oxnard Metal Company became suspicious of Thompson and an associate who came to the business to recycle the plaques for cash earlier this month.

Oxnard Metal employees refused to purchase the plaques and immediately notified police of the suspicious activity. Oxnard police Detective Kathleen Ennis said, “If it were not for the cooperation of Oxnard Metal in reporting this suspicious activity, this case would have never been solved.”

At the time of this press release, Thompson was being processed at the Oxnard police station. Bail will be set later this evening. Charges will include possession of stolen property and possession of methamphetamines.

I do get frustrated when only parts of the information we release is put into the newspaper article or on the TV news.  One of the reasons we started doing Straight to You webcasts (posted at oxnardpd.org) was due to my longtime frustration at incomplete reporting. It is not uncommon for me to talk to a reporter for 10-15 minutes about a crime story and then find only 2-3 sentences of what I said appearing in the article. And I get very frustrated at incomplete suspect information - to not include every bit of info we have on a suspect - to me - is simply not right nor in the best interest of public safety.

Through your efforts at least people can see more complete information.

It will be tomorrow before I can add you to my distribution list - our computer folks don't typically work Sunday's, but I'll have him add you when he comes in Monday.

With respect to your offer to help enroll people in the Reverse 911 system - absolutely I think that would be great - I'm not in charge of that system but I'll pass your offer onto the person that is and maybe you and she can coordinate those efforts.

On a side note - I see that we (OPD) are getting blasted a bit in the Star blogs about not using the R-911 system yesterday with this 211/homicide. I understand people's frustration, however I believe using that system yesterday would have caused more problems than it would have solved. I cannot go into all the reasons I feel that way, because if I did it could compromise the integrity of this investigation, but sometimes people just need to trust us in how and why we do or don't do certain things.

We always weigh the pros and cons of our decisions - and that may not always make sense to everyone - but always keep in mind we are operating with a great deal more information about a particular situation that the general public. Also keep in mind that we release only a small percentage of the information we have in any particular situation...and great consideration is always given as to what we release or don't release.

I know that answer won't appease some people but yesterday was a very fluid situation and we utilized the tools we felt would work best.

Thank you very much for your efforts. (Feel free to cut and paste this e-mail onto your blog)

805vigilante Volunteer

Reporter: Opns 1 Response
It’s very nice to see that an 805vigilante group is starting in Ventura County – and thank you to the person who started this blog site. I appreciate it very much – because I know that I have my fears about our cities.

Ventura County has seen so many killings, robberies, assaults, etc. in the last couple of weeks in a rampage. And I for one am sick of all of this.

People, we need to take our streets back! Yes you, the Citizens of each city need to come together to outweigh the low class intellect in the community.

I know that I will be watching my neighbor closely, making sure that they are okay or if there are any intruders on them. I just may be taking your picture. I call for all neighbors to do the same. Please look out after me, as I will be looking out for you.

It’s so scary to get involved, but you can be anonymous such as Crime Stoppers. I urge all concerned citizens to partake in anyway to make our county a safer place to live.

Regards
