DETAILS:
Oxnard police are investigating an attempted embezzlement of an elderly Malibu couple Friday afternoon in Oxnard. If it were not for alert and suspicious City National Bank personnel, the potential loss in this incident could have been over one hundred thousand dollars.
A Malibu couple in their 80s was approached by a male and female outside Food4Less. The suspects told the couple they had a winning lottery ticket worth over $500,000, but because they were from Ecuador and not U.S. citizens, could not cash the ticket legally. They asked the couple for collateral in the amount of $134,000 in order to cash the ticket with an “agency” in Los Angeles.
The couple went to one bank and obtained a cashier’s check in the requested amount. Because the first bank did not have sufficient cash, the couple went to City National Bank to cash the check. Bank personnel grew suspicious of the circumstances of this large withdrawal attempt and immediately contacted Oxnard police.
Officers arrived on scene within minutes and canvassed the area but could not locate the suspects. Quick thinking by City National Bank personnel resulted in no monetary loss to either victim.
Lottery scams and related embezzlement crimes are infrequent but regular occurrences in Ventura County and across the country. Persons who are approached by strangers asking for help in cashing checks, lottery tickets or other monetary items—but are required to give cash deposit first—must not give any cash or personal information to such persons and contact local law enforcement immediately.
An investigation is continuing.
