Reporter: Ellen Rodriguez 0 Responses
DETAILS:
The Oxnard Police Department will be hosting the Crime free Business class on January 5, 2009, at the Oxnard Police Station. The class is from 7 A.M. to 9 A.M.

What is Crime Free Business?
Crime Free Business is based on research conducted by UCLA with Los Angeles City
businesses and decades of research conducted nationwide. Implementing Crime Free
Business strategies have reduced robberies by up to 45 percent and other violent crimes
like assaults and batteries to employees by nearly 30 percent.

What is the purpose of the Crime Free Business program?
Reduce robbery and other crimes in and around the business.
Provide a safe work environment for employees, customers and employers.
Increase the number of customers coming into the business.

Why is Crime Free Business important to businesses?
Homicide is a leading cause of workplace death in the United States, and workers in retail
are at the greatest risk.
Over two-thirds of workplace homicides and nearly 20 percent of nonfatal assaults occur in
the course of a robbery.
Crime Free Business gives retail and service establishments proven strategies to reduce the
likelihood of being robbed, surviving a robbery if one does occur, and reducing other
crimes like shoplifting and employee assaults.
What is involved in participating in the Crime Free Business program?
There are three phases to becoming certified as a Crime Free Business:
Two-hour training session for business owners and/or managers conducted at a location
and time convenient to the business operator. Employees are also welcome to attend.
On-site security evaluation at a time convenient to the business operator
On-site business follow-up at a time convenient to the business operator
Businesses are asked to comply with seven, low-cost measures to reduce their chances of being
robbed or a target of other crimes. The 7-step program includes:

>Employee Training
>Cash Management
>Lighting
>Visibility
>Access Control
>General Appearance / Facilities Management
>Crime Prevention Signage

What are the benefits of being certified as a Crime Free Business?
“Up to a 40 percent reduction in liability insurance”.
Improved safety and security to business owners and managers, employees and customers
Increased customer volume—Participation in the program is good for business
Program specifically tailored to the security and safety needs of your business
Program materials, including employee training brochures and video, decals, and employee
Manual
Help defend your business against civil liability.

What are other businesses saying about the program?
The 2-hour training added a considerable amount to what business operators knew about
how to protect their businesses and employees from crime
Making the changes recommended in the program would not be difficult
Employees are better prepared to prevent and respond to a crime, thus giving them a sense
of control over their workplace
Networking opportunity with other businesses

What do businesses get and how much does it cost?
Each business gets a program manual, safety decals, employee training brochures, and a
training video
Crime Free Business is free to all businesses located in the city of Oxnard.

Overview

Reporter: Elidet Reyes 0 Responses
Our mission is to create a plethora of resources to empower our community to be more vigilant and preventive.

Our local law enforcement cannot be everywhere at once, so they rely on people like us to report crime and do our civic duty.

Here are just a few of the goals we would like to share with our readers:

Online Strategy

We have created a myspace & twitter page.
This will help us interact and communicate with our online savvy market.

We have also updated the look of our own site!

Newsletter

You can sign up to receive a digest of any updates to our blog. It is only sent out on the days we post a blog entry, which can be almost daily. If this is too intrusive, we recommend signing up to our RSS feed.

To sign up to our newsletter, please use the email subscription form with your email. After signing up, you will need to confirm your subscription by confirming your email.

Community Outreach

We will be more active in informing the community of all the resources available not only to victims, but for those who would like to help but would like to remain anonymous.

We will also be focusing on bringing together the cultural gap between our diverse county. Racism is very real and many times, it is due to misunderstandings and stereotypes. Our main focus will also be to reach out to the Spanish speaking community, who do not always have the same resources available.

Here at the Ventura County Crime Blog, we are always open to ideas and suggestions. Feel free to contact us with any information, tips, suggestions, links, etc.
